meridian, meridiem

meridian, meridiem
These words are so closely related in meaning that using one for the other is understandable and usually unnoticed. Meridian means "midday," just as meridiem does. Thus postmeridian (one word) and post meridiem (two words) mean "occurring after noon," "in the afternoon." When the abbreviations A. M. and P. M. are spelled out, the word should be meridiem (ante meridiem, post meridiem).
